In response to the incident of an eviction drive at Silsako Beel in Guwahati, the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has instructed the Kamrup Metro District administration to carry out a magisterial enquiry. The AHRC case number 4627 of 2022/23 (9)/3 serves as the basis for this directive.
The Kamrup Metro District administration received a notice from the Deputy Registrar of the AHRC, located in Bhangagarh, Guwahati. The notice emphasizes the need for the submission of an Enquiry Report regarding the eviction incident at Silsako Beel, Guwahati. The office of the District Magistrate, Kamrup Metropolitan District, Guwahati has granted approval for the enquiry.
Consequently, Priyanshu Bharadwaj, an Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Kamrup Metropolitan District, Guwahati, has been assigned the responsibility of conducting the enquiry into the aforementioned matter. The findings of the investigation must be submitted within seven days upon receiving this order, which will then be forwarded to the AHRC. Additionally, Bhaskar Jyoti Kalita, an Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate of Kamrup Metropolitan District, Guwahati, has been directed to assist Priyanshu Bharadwaj, the ADM, throughout the enquiry process.
The decision to entrust ADM Priyanshu Bharadwaj with the enquiry stems from AHRC case no. 4627 of 2022/23 (9)/3. The Kamrup Metro administration expects the ADM to conduct a thorough investigation and provide the findings to the AHRC within the next seven days.
To address any potential concerns or issues that may arise during the enquiry, Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Bhaskar Jyoti Kalita has been instructed to assist ADM Priyanshu Bharadwaj.
Earlier, on May 10, a significant number of individuals gathered to protest against the eviction drive initiated by the Assam government in February at Silsako Beel in Guwahati.
During the protest, the demonstrators strongly criticized the government, alleging that the eviction had been carried out without proper notification. One of the protestors, while speaking to India Today NE, expressed their frustration, stating, "It wouldn't have happened if we hadn't voted for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). If they want to kill us, let them kill us at once. They have the force to kill us. We voted for them to protect us, not to kill us and destroy our houses without proper notice."
Another protestor, aggrieved by the eviction, claimed that the government had displaced them onto the streets under the guise of the eviction drive. They remarked, "Despite knowing that we are natives of Assam, the government threw us onto the roads. We are protesting against the injustice that has been done to us."
