In a delightful development for zoo enthusiasts, the Assam State Zoo Cum Botanical Garden in Guwahati has welcomed five new inmates after a span of 30 years. The zoo now houses two zebras, two mandarin ducks, and a female giraffe, bringing new vibrancy to the wildlife collection.
Sources reveal that the zebras and mandarin ducks have been transported from Mysore, while the female giraffe has been brought from Patna. Assam's Minister for Environment & Forests, Chandra Mohan Patowary, officially introduced these fascinating creatures to the zoo's visitors on Monday. During the media interaction, the minister also shared the names assigned to each of the five animals.
The two zebras have been named Jay and Jaya, while the giraffe has been affectionately called Bijaya.
Earlier this month, as part of an animal exchange program between the Patna Zoo and the Assam Zoo, the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park in Patna received four new inmates. In exchange for a female giraffe, the Patna Zoo obtained a pair of hoolock gibbons, a male black panther, and a female rhinoceros. A team of officials and veterinarians from the Assam zoo had visited the Patna zoo to facilitate the smooth execution of the animal exchange process.
These new additions to the Assam State Zoo promise an enhanced and diverse experience for visitors, showcasing the beauty and uniqueness of these remarkable animals.
