In a significant development, Amrit Dutta, a prominent figure in the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday. The joining ceremony took place in Digboi, located in Assam's Tinsukia district, and witnessed the addition of several other influential local leaders to the party's ranks.
Amrit Dutta, who previously held a leadership position in the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), played a pivotal role in spearheading the demonstrations against the CAA. Notably, he faced legal consequences for his active participation in the protests, being arrested by Tinsukia police in December 2019 and subsequently spending a month in jail.
In a further boost to the BJP, Ashok Sharma, a notable Congress leader, Anupam Dutta, a state executive of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), and Hemanta Burhagohain, a leader representing the Tai ethnic group, also joined the party during the momentous event held in Digboi.
The BJP's growing influence was further underscored as approximately 300 individuals, as per insider sources, decided to align themselves with the saffron party and join its ranks.
This move by Amrit Dutta and the inclusion of other prominent local leaders bolsters the BJP's presence in Assam's political landscape, potentially reshaping the dynamics ahead of upcoming elections and signaling a shifting political landscape in the state.
