Railway Bridge Under Construction Collapses in Mizoram.

Mizoram: A heart-wrenching incident unfolded on Wednesday, August 23 around 10 a.m. near the Sairang area of Mizoram, approximately 21 km from the state capital Aizawl, as an under-construction railway bridge crumbled. The catastrophe has resulted in the loss of at least 17 lives, while numerous others are anxiously suspected to be trapped beneath the debris. The bridge, intended to establish essential railway connectivity to Aizawl, was being crafted, and at the time of the unfortunate event, it accommodated 40 diligent construction workers.

As the situation continues to evolve, a police officer reported that 17 bodies have been recovered from the wreckage, and the count of missing individuals remains distressingly high. The Sairang branch of the Young Mizo Association has promptly initiated rescue endeavours, tirelessly striving to unearth those who may still be caught beneath the rubble.

The ill-fated bridge was a component of a significant undertaking by Indian Railways, aiming to interlink all state capitals within the northeast region. It had been in the process of construction for several years, dedicated to enhancing connectivity. Shedding light on the calamity, Sabyasachi De, Chief Public Relations Officer of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), expressed, "The incident happened around 11 a.m. We are yet to ascertain the reason behind the accident and how many people were actually on it when it occurred."

This tragic incident casts a sombre shadow, prompting questions about the circumstances leading to the bridge's collapse and emphasizing the dire need for meticulous safety measures during large-scale construction projects.
